About ten years ago, my boss at the marketing agency casually told me he'd sold my new client a "comprehensive content strategy."

Commence panic.

I'd never built one before, because back then, content strategies weren't nearly as common as they are today. And I was just a wee content baby making things up as I went.

So I set about figuring it out myself. I took in what little research there was, and slowly began to piece together something that I thought might help guide my client's strategy in the right direction --- and keep my agency in business with them long-term.

The first time I built one, it felt like fumbling around in the dark.

But over time, I started to pick up a hidden rhythm. I began to understand what kinds of questions I needed to ask, what research I needed to perform, and the best way to condense, communicate, and execute on all that information.

It doesn't help that every year, algorithm and technology "advances" change how we need to think about content strategy.

But those rapid-fire changes only make a content strategy more necessary than ever. Otherwise, you have no way of testing, experimenting, and discovering what works in this new SEO age.

So to that end, I decided to give an updated take on how to build a content strategy in 2025.
